LG Gram 14Z990 Review

LG is known for its best-in-class home appliances and electronics. Who would have thought LG will make laptops one day. LG launched the first gram in 2014 in South Korea, The prime focus of the line up was to make light weight laptops.

In 2019 LG launched the latest version 14Z990 with the following specs.

Unboxing

The box comes with Laptop, power cord and a USB C to Lan cable.

Design

The LG gram has a clean design with no visible screws or vents on the bottom; instead, the vents are cleverly hidden in the hinge. This design choice gives the laptop a sleek and premium appearance, enhancing its overall aesthetic.

Additionally, the LG gram is incredibly light, which is quite impressive. During the first few days of using the laptop, I was consistently amazed at how easily I could pick it up with just one hand, especially considering its feature-rich design. If portability is a key factor for you, LG has truly excelled in this aspect. Furthermore, despite its lightweight nature, the laptop can be effortlessly opened with just a finger, eliminating the need to hold down the base.

In terms of connectivity, the LG gram closely resembles previous gram models. On the right side, you’ll find two USB Type-A ports with USB 3.1 speeds, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, a microSD card slot, and a Kensington lock port for added security when using the laptop in public places.

Performance

The laptop has a screen resolution 1920 by 1080. I’m aware that there are several laptops available now with QHD or 4K displays. While I haven’t had the opportunity to experience those personally, I find the 1080p resolution on this screen size to be perfectly satisfactory. The display appears sharp, meeting my expectations, and I had no issues with it.

In my opinion, the keyboard on the LG gram feels quite comfortable. It provides a satisfying typing experience, especially for someone like me with less experience. The keys have good travel, and they respond promptly when pressed.

Regarding the trackpad, it’s quite impressive. While not the largest I’ve encountered, it’s also not the smallest. The utilization of Precision drivers is a standout feature, offering a host of additional controls and smooth, effective gestures. While it may not be the absolute smoothest trackpad available, it certainly performs well enough.

The laptop handles all the day to day task smoothly. For basic productivity tasks such as writing and web browsing, the LG gram performs admirably. Its lightweight design makes it highly portable, which is a definite plus. Despite its incredibly light weight, the LG gram offers impressive battery life. It can easily last through an entire workday, even with tasks like web browsing with multiple tabs open, taking video calls, and watching YouTube videos in the background for extended periods

Conclusion

The portability is the most important factor for a laptop. Weight and battery life play crucial roles in determining how portable and convenient a laptop is for daily use.
This is exemplified by the enduring popularity of the MacBook Air series, which excels in meeting these portability needs. It is lightweight, well-suited for day-to-day tasks, and offers a good battery life.

In my opinion, the LG Gram can be seen as the Windows equivalent of the MacBook Air for Windows users.

The LG Gram features a clean and sleek design, combining super-light portability with easy one-finger opening. Despite its light weight, the battery life is impressive. Additionally, it boasts a quality display with touch support, a comfortable and accurate keyboard, and a decently-sized trackpad equipped with Precision drivers, making it a delight to use.
